Screen time calculator How many steps is your scrolling?
Doomstep, the walk to unlock app for iPhone, turns steps into screen time: 100 steps earns 1 minute, and steps past your daily goal count double. With the default 7,000-step goal, 90 minutes a day on Instagram and TikTok takes 8,000 steps.

How the math works
Doomstep pays for steps in minutes, and this calculator runs the same rule backwards.
- Up to your daily goal, every 100 steps earns 1 minute.
- Past your goal, steps count double: every 50 steps earns 1 minute.
- A day earns at most 180 minutes, however far you walk.
- Minutes are whole. The app rounds down, so it never counts a minute you haven’t walked.
In one line: minutes = steps up to your goal ÷ 100, plus steps past your goal ÷ 50, rounded down, up to 180 a day. The calculator finds the fewest steps that earn your minutes, using the app’s own code.
Walking time assumes a brisk pace of about 100 steps a minute. Your steps don’t have to come from one walk: everything your iPhone or Apple Watch counts adds up. Your year in screen time is your minutes a day times 365, in full 24-hour days.
In the app, you spend minutes on a 5, 15 or 30 minute break, and your apps lock again when the break ends.
| Screen time a day | Steps to earn it | Brisk walking time |
|---|---|---|
| 15 min | 1,500 | about 15 min |
| 30 min | 3,000 | about 30 min |
| 60 min | 6,000 | about 1 hr |
| 90 min | 8,000 | about 1 hr 20 min |
| 120 min | 9,500 | about 1 hr 35 min |
| 180 min | 12,500 | about 2 hr 5 min |
| 240 min | 12,500 | about 2 hr 5 min |
*A day earns at most 180 minutes, at 12,500 steps with this goal. The other 60 of 240 minutes can’t be earned in one day.
Common questions
Is this how Doomstep counts?
Yes. This calculator runs the Doomstep app’s own earning code: 100 steps earns 1 minute, steps past your daily goal count double, and a day earns at most 180 minutes. It leaves out the one-time welcome bonus and other bonus minutes.
How do I check my screen time on iPhone?
Open Settings and tap Screen Time. On iOS 27, tap Daily Average. On iOS 26 and earlier, tap See All App & Website Activity. Then tap Day or Week to see your time in each app.
What happens after I reach my step goal?
Your steps keep earning, and they count double: every 50 steps past your goal earns 1 minute. That lasts until the day reaches 180 minutes.
Can I earn more than 180 minutes in a day?
No. 180 minutes is the most a day of walking can earn, however far you walk. With the default 7,000-step goal, you reach it at 12,500 steps.
What counts as a step?
Steps your iPhone or Apple Watch counts, from a walk, the stairs or the trip to the store. Steps typed into Apple Health, steps from other apps and steps from another iPhone on your Apple Account don’t count.
Is 100 steps a minute a brisk walk?
For many adults, yes. A 2018 review of 38 studies found about 100 steps a minute to be a good rule of thumb for moderate-intensity walking. At that pace, 30 minutes of walking is about 3,000 steps. Your own pace may be faster or slower.
What happens to minutes I don’t use?
Up to 60 unused minutes you earned carry into the next day. Bonus minutes don’t carry over.
Does the calculator predict my screen time?
No. It turns the minutes you enter into steps at Doomstep’s rate. It can’t know what you’ll do, and Doomstep doesn’t promise less screen time.
Do I need an account to use the calculator?
No. It works in your browser, and nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
